San Antonio Fitness, Independent, & Recreational Environment (SAFIRE) receives $10,000 MassMutual Foundation Grant

San Antonio, Texas, June 22, 2018 - San Antonio Fitness, Independent, & Recreational Environment (SAFIRE) is a day activity center for young adults with intellectual disabilities which focus on healthy life styles, continuing education and pre-vocational skills.  SAFIRE has received a $10,000 grant from the MassMutual Foundation as part of a national Community Service Award (CSA) program.  SAFIRE is one of twenty-two organizations nationally to receive an award. The MassMutual Foundation made the grant as a tribute to the volunteer efforts of Darren Scrimpshire, a MassMutual financial advisor with MassMutual South Texas in San Antonio, Texas.

“We are stronger when we come together as a community, and our Community Service Awards program recognizes a group of MassMutual financial professionals who embody this spirit, working with members of their respective neighborhoods, towns and cities, helping nonprofits with which they are involved grow and thrive,” said Dennis Duquette, Head of MassMutual Community Responsibility and President of the MassMutual Foundation.   “We are proud of the time and energy Darren dedicates to better his community and delighted to support the great work MassMutual financial professionals do with organizations across the country.”

SAFIRE was developed to serve the need for active and educational programs for young adults with intellectual disabilities.  An active daily physical program and continuing education is our goal to make sure each client is as functional and independent as possible to be successful adults in their community.

“This amazing award from the MassMutual Foundation will be instrumental in continuing the SAFIRE mission and positively impacting lives in the intellectual disability community through the purchase of additional equipment, improving programs and facility upgrades,” said Teresa Sullivan, SAFIRE Founder.

Darren has been with MassMutual South Texas for seven years. He has been committed to SAFIRE since 2012 and has dedicated countless hours of time and talent to help the organization grow and flourish.

“I am very pleased that my dedication to SAFIRE has been recognized by the MassMutual Foundation,” said Darren. “This grant will provide much needed funding to continue supporting our community through allowing every individual with an intellectual disability the opportunity to grow beyond expectations.”
